UK households are being encouraged to perform a quick 30-second check that could prevent cracked patios and help them dodge expensive repairs later, which could amount to as much as £1,700 according to Checkatrade. Paving slab experts at Reclaimed Brick Company have emphasised it's "vital" to carry out this swift check before the end of October as autumn ushers in damp days and reduced light.
Moisture tends to linger on the surface, leaves decompose and stain, and water from heavy downpours often seeps into tiny crevices. When the initial frosts appear, the trapped water freezes, expands and causes slabs to fracture.
Neglecting minor repairs can result in higher costs later, particularly for households trying to economise. Topping up joint sand on block paving typically requires only a few bags of kiln-dried sand, costing tens of pounds in materials.
Leaving gaps until winter can lead to loose blocks and water damage. If mortar joints between flags are cracked, repointing a typical terrace can run into hundreds once you account for materials and labour.
If slabs chip or lift, you may need new flags plus the cost to lift, rebed and relay them, resulting in a larger bill.
Test the edges of several slabs by stepping on them.
Should any slab shift or make a clicking sound, mark it for repair.
Examine the joints carefully.
For block paving, if sand levels appear low or have been washed away, arrange to brush in kiln-dried sand following a thorough clean. For paved flags, where mortar shows cracks or gaps, repair those sections.
Ensure drains and gullies remain unblocked so contaminated water flows away rather than pooling beneath the surface.
A spokesperson for Reclaimed Brick Company said: "Regular care beats costly repairs. Take 30 seconds each week to press on slab edges, top up the joints and keep drains clear. Gentle cleaning and small fixes now keep water out so your patio stays firm and crack-free through winter."
