Rice is not typically that difficult to make. However, there are plenty of opportunities for it to go wrong, and it can easily become over or undercooked. Common mistakes when cooking rice include adding too much water, cooking on a heat that is too high, and cooking it for the wrong amount of time.
And so while rice might be straightforward for some, personal chef and food blogger Amy Casey decided to share her method on how to cook perfectly fluffy white rice for those who do find it challenging. On her blog, Amy Casey Cooks, the chef shared her "foolproof method" of easy steps to ensure your rice turns out delicious and "not sticky".
Ms Casey insisted that every home cook should know one thing in particular when it comes to making the ultimate pot of rice and that is avoiding this one common mistake.
Ms Casey wrote: "DON'T PEEK AT THE RICE AS IT COOKS. Sorry for yelling but, I want to get your attention. This is one of my most important keys to cooking a perfect pot of rice. By lifting the lid on the rice, steam will escape. The temperature inside the pot will be lowered and will alter the cooking time."
Now that you've established what not to do. Here is Amy Casey's method for perfect rice:
Ingredients:- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 185 grames long grain rice (white, basmati, or jasmine)
- 474ml hot water
Step 1
Heat a medium-sized (1-litre) pot over medium low heat. Add the oil and the rice. Stir the rice so it is coated with the oil. Let the rice cook for about two minutes. You should detect a slightly nutty smell.
Step 2
Pour in the two cups of hot water. Turn the heat to medium high. Bring the rice and water to a full boil.
Step 3
Turn the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight fitting lid.
Step 4
Cook the rice for 15 minutes - no peeking!
Step 5
After the cooking time, turn off the heat and let the rice rest for five minutes. Do not remove the lid.
Step 6
After the resting time, uncover the pot, fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
