Keeping food fresh for longer can save time and money. But some items go off much faster than expected, especially fruits and vegetables. They often sprout or go soft before you've had a chance to use them and have to be thrown away. One of those items is onions.
Luckily, there's one very simple trick that can stop this happening. And it's not expensive or complicated. In fact, all you need is an old piece of clothing you probably already have, and experts say it can keep onions fresh for up to eight months.
The method may sound strange at first, but it's quick, effective, and could save you from throwing away perfectly good food.
According to kitchen experts at Olive & Barr, onions should be stored inside a pair of tights.
They said: "Keeping your onions in a pair of tights can help them last up to, wait for it, an incredible eight months longer.
"Just pop your onions in one by one, tying a knot between each one before storing them in a dark, dry place."
They added: "Your family will probably question your life choices at first, but we guarantee they'll start copying you before long."
And when you need an onion, just snip one off the bottom.
However, it's important to only use onions that are firm and dry, with no green shoots or signs of mould.
Yellow and white onions also tend to last longer than sweet or red varieties.
The trick works because the tights let air flow around the onions and keep them separated. This helps stop them rotting or sprouting too early.
It's also important to keep onions away from potatoes, which give off moisture that can make them spoil faster.
But those who have tried the tights method have not held back in their praise. One person wrote: "I was very sceptical at first but it genuinely works. I've had onions in a pair of tights for about five months and they are completely fine."
Another added: "It was a weird conversation with my wife to start with when I asked her for a pair of tights, but she's very happy with me now. The trick works and we've cut our onion waste massively."
A third commented: "I remember my grandma using this trick back in the day and I've always done the same. It definitely works."
