Movie fans have been raving about a "powerful" "masterpiece" World War II prisoner of war drama despite the fact it only has a 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unbroken was released in 2014 and was produced and directed by Hollywood heavyweight Angelina Jolie and written by the Coen brothers, Richard LaGravenese, and William Nicholson. It tells the true story of American Olympian Louis "Louie" Zamperini (played by Jack O'Connell) who survived in a raft for 47 days after his bomber ditched in the ocean before being captured by the Japanese and being sent to a series of prisoner of war camps where he was tortured by Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) corporal Mutsuhiro Watanabe (Miyavi).
He was eventually liberated when the Americans occupied Japan at the end of the war but his nemesis never faced justice and instead went into hiding, evading prosecution despite being on the top 40 most-wanted Japanese war criminals list compiled by General Douglas MacArthur's staff.
Sadly the real Louie Zamperini died just under five months before the film's Christmas release on July 2, 2014, at 97.
The movie recieved mixed response from critics but was nominted for three Oscars, albeit in technical categories. It was acknowledged in Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
In total it grossed $163.4million dollars against a $65million budget and it is now finding a whole new audience on streaming giant Netflix. Fans have taken to Google to rave about the movie leaving it glowing reviews.
"A truly inspiring masterpiece, Unbroken is one of the most powerful and deeply moving films I've ever seen... Truly unforgettable. A must-watch for anyone who loves real stories of strength and survival," one wrote.
"I had emotional breakdowns watching this movie. Such a creative masterpiece. This is definitely among my best ten movies of all time. All in all, this is a 10/10 movie," another raved.
A third chimed in: "A very powerful film about the strength of the human spirit In my opinion, very underrated. Rotten Tomatoes only gave this 52% - that says a lot and proves that Google Reviews are more reliable. An important film."
A fourth gushed: "This is the most powerful movie I have ever seen... it was flawless. The ending left me in tears it was so powerful... I will be recommending this movie to everyone I meet."
Meanwhile a fifth shared: "Amazing movie with a gripping story of survival, hope and sheer courage. I would've liked it to be a bit longer and involve more gruesome scenes of their survival and rebellion among the camps but overall a decent watch. 8/10."
