Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Delhi (beginning Monday) has stoked political controversy, with the Congress party openly questioning the timing and intent of his engagements with the Indian leadership. Wang will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, and NSA Ajit Doval, with border issues and bilateral relations expected to top the agenda.
Congress’s Concerns and Allegations-
Direct Military Support to Pakistan:
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh pointed out on social media that Wang’s arrival comes just after China provided significant military aid to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. This reportedly included J-10C fighter jets, advanced PL-15 air-to-air missiles, and various modern drones and missiles. -
Live Intelligence Sharing:
Deputy Army Chief Lieutenant General Rahul R. Singh recently stated that China gave live intelligence to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, acting as an active adversary to India. Jairam Ramesh cited this as serious grounds for concern. -
Strategic Water Projects:
China is constructing the massive 60 GW Medog Dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river (Brahmaputra), raising fresh strategic concerns for India over water security.
-
Constraints on Indian Patrols:
Congress criticized the disengagement agreements made with China, especially since October 2024, which reportedly require Indian patrols to seek permission from Chinese authorities in areas like Depsang, Demchok, and Chushul. Buffer zones have been agreed upon in Galwan, Hot Spring, and Pangong Tso, often in areas that were previously under India’s control. -
Galwan Martyrs and Prime Minister’s Statement:
Jairam Ramesh accused PM Modi of undermining the sacrifices of Indian soldiers killed in the 2020 Galwan clash by stating, “no one has entered our border nor is anyone inside.” Congress argues that this stance weakened India’s diplomatic and territorial position.
