Premier League star responds to 'dangerous' social media post amid Sunderland controversy

Morgan Rogers has hit out at Sunderlandfor posting a video of a dangerous tackle he was subjected to during Aston Villa's 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Rogers found himself on the wrong end of a reckless challenge from Sunderland's Trai Hume during Sunday's Premier League match. The 23-year-old went in for the ball but ended up taking out his opponent, leaving Rogers writhing on the pitch clutching his ankle.

The home crowd cheered the challenge and Sunderland took to social media to seemingly celebrate it. On Monday, the Black Cats posted a video of the tackle with the caption: "Still got the ball."

Rogers responded by sharing the video on his Instagram Stories and adding: "Great message to send out... Dangerous tackles getting highlight reels," followed by a clapping hands emoji.

Unai Emery's team had to make do with a draw despite the hosts being reduced to ten men in the 33rd minute. Matty Cash netted the only goal for Villa before Wilson Isidor levelled the score.

Reinildo Mandava was shown a red card in the first half for Sunderland for violent conduct towards Villa full-back Cash. Mandava reacted after being knocked over by the Poland international, right under the fourth official's watchful gaze.

The Sunderland defender argued with the officials before eventually leaving the pitch. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher praised referee Sam Barrott for noticing the incident and taking action.

He said: "He [Sam Barrott] has done really good to keep his eye on the incident, he has not followed the ball and because he has not, he has picked it up - but why would a player do this?"

Sky Sports pundit Jay Boothroyd added: "It is ridiculous, you can see the frustration. Cash might have gone in slightly late, but it does not warrant that reaction and as soon as he has kicked up with his legs, he and everyone knows he is getting a red card. He let himself and the team down and it is poor from the player."

Villa will be aiming to finally secure their first win of the season over the coming week. The Midlands side kick off their Europa League campaign against Italian outfit Bologna.

They then follow that up with a Premier League showdown with Fulham on Sunday afternoon at Villa Park.
