James Maddison took to social media to bemoan the officials' decision to rule out a goal in the first half of Tottenham's clash with West Ham on Saturday night following a check from VAR.
Spurs thought they had broken the deadlock in their London derby against the Hammers when Cristian Romero planted a header beyond Mads Hermansen in the home goal. However, referee Jarred Gillett ruled the goal out for a 'push' from Micky van de Ven on Kyle Walker-Peters during the corner as Romero found the net.
The decision quickly became a big talking point online and Maddison - who is currently sidelined after undergoing ACL surgery - vented his frustrations on X, where he accused Premier League officials and VAR of having an "absolute shocker".
"Honestly the referees & VAR have had an absolute shocker of a start to the season," he wrote. "If that goal is disallowed for a foul you will never ever see a corner be taken without referee blowing for something ever again."

The Premier League Match Centre account confirmed the reasons behind the decision, saying: "The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that van de Ven pushed Walker-Peters in the back and impacted his ability to play the ball."
But Ashley Williams, speaking on Match of The Day, was in full agreement with Maddison, arguing that the goal should never have been ruled out.

He said: "Cristian Romero’s goal should have stood. West Ham’s goalkeeper pushes his own player into Micky van de Ven, who then collides with Kyle Walker-Peters but the Tottenham player didn’t initiate that contact. We’ve watched it back numerous times and you can see he doesn’t push Walker-Peters over.
"The referee has given the decision on the field and because of that VAR is reluctant to intervene but that’s what they’re there for. We’d like to see more goals given and it’s the wrong decision, which is frustrating."
