A two-year-old boy has tragically died and multiple people have been injured after car ploughed into a restaurant in what police have called a "tragic accident".
Emergency services, including local police and fire crews, rushed to the scene after recieving reports of multiple people being injured following a car crash. At approximately 1:55pm local time, officers made their way to the scene at Portillo’s, Illinois located at 2810 Route 34.
At least 14 people were injured and eight individuals, including the driver of the vehicle, were transported to local hospitals for treatment, Oswego Police Department confirmed. The child and the others who were injured were all inside the restaurant when the crash occurred, police reportedly said. During a news conference earlier today Chief Jason Bastin said: "We understand how difficult and emotional this incident is for everyone involved, to include the families impacted by this tragedy, as well as our community, our officers and the fire department personnel who responded.
"At approximately 1:55 p.m., officers responded to reports of a vehicle that had crashed through the front entrance of Portillo’s, located at 2810 Route 34.
"This incident has resulted in multiple injuries and, tragically, one fatality. We can now confirm that a 2-year-old male has died as a result of this crash. On behalf of the police and fire department we extend our deepest condolences to the family during this devastating time. We ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss."
Police confirmed 14 people were injured and eight individuals, including the driver of the vehicle, were transported to area hospitals and six others were treated at the scene and released
Chief Jason Bastin added: "Our investigation is in its early stages, but preliminary information suggests this was a tragic accident. However, we are thoroughly reviewing all available evidence, including witness statements and surveillance video, to determine exactly what occurred.
"There was a large presence of first responders at the scene as we investigated the incident. Support services are being made available, and we are coordinating closely with victim assistance resources. We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available. Thank you."
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, though police believe it was an accident.
A spokesperson for Portillo's told The Mirror that the restaurant would be closed for the rest of the day.
